Colbert is brilliant. Beck is so out there that on his show yesterday, no less a conservative eminence than Bill O'Reilly seemed to be openly mocking Beck's notion of the government "slowly drifting into fascism."

This was a Georgia industrial disaster that killed 14 people and injured over 40 in an explosion caused by unsafe conditions at a sugar plant.Saxby Chambliss' response to this disaster was to attack a company whistleblower whose advice, if followed, may have helped prevent the disaster.
Chambliss has been subpoenaed in a civil case brought by the families of the victims, and in true Bushian style, he is refusing to answer the subpoena:
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington debunks Chambliss' claims that the Speech or Debate Clause prevents him from testifying.
I've spent the last two years arguing against Tom Schaller's Whistling Past Dixie. I remain grateful for Dean and Obama's 50-state strategy. But the results of the election convincingly show Schaller's diagnosis to be correct. I can still disagree about the cure.

"I want to fly into your airspace!"
Madonna gamely launched into "I Love New York" last night during her second MSG Sticky & Sweet show. She seemed pleased to have a more recent song nominated--although the audience didn't know the lyrics past the first few trade-offs! (That's okay, Madonna messed up her own lyrics three or four times last night, each time taking it in stride and laughing it off. She's really a changed artist--for the better!--when it comes to stage warmth and audience interaction.)
We have to hope the country makes the right choice. McCain's gone beyond the line. Palin has no clue what she's doing.
Four years ago, the field of Democratic presidential hopefuls spent most of their time explaining how much different they would be from Bush/Cheney. Before long, Karl Rove sent out word to the Republican Machine: label the candidates and their supporters "angry." The goal, of course, was to characterize Bush/Cheney as optimistic and hopeful, while painting Democrats as wild-eyed, rage-driven nuts.It's almost comical in retrospect.
I choose hope.
